The JMLBA scholarship is offered to recognize and promote the academic achievement of two law students in Columbus that have:

  1. Demonstrated academic excellence and achievement in undergraduate, graduate, and legal excellence;

  2. Shown involvement and leadership in community organizations that further the mission of the JMLBA;

  3. Aspires to have a career in the legal profession that furthers the mission of the JMLBA and the legacy of John Mercer Langston (including promoting excellence and diversity in the legal profession and demonstrating a commitment to community service); and

  4. Achieved personal milestones or overcome personal hardships that are worthy of recognition.

JMLBA is dedicated to supporting outstanding Black law students.

We provide scholarships for law students based on financial need and merit through an evaluation process which includes a written application.

Scholarship recipients are notified in the Spring and will be recognized at the Annual Gala. The recipient and their guest are invited to attend the gala as JMLBA’s guests of honor. Scholarship proceeds will be paid directly to the educational institution, and may be applied toward tuition, books, and required course-related expenses only.

JMLBA will award two scholarships, with the intent to award a scholarship to one Moritz and one Capital law student. The application materials consist of: (1) completed application; (2) personal statement (max 500 words); (3) resume; and (4) an unofficial copy of your transcript. The award recipient will be required to submit an official transcript prior to receiving the scholarship award.
